Christians Are "Watched All the Time..."

Feb 2, 2021

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." —John 1:5

I came across a staggering description recently and felt compelled to write you about it.

"Eritrea is known as the 'North Korea of East Africa'"...

Can you imagine?

This is how harshly — how ruthlessly — Eritrean Christians are persecuted by their own government and by the Eritrean Orthodox Church (the only government-approved Christian denomination in the nation).

A coastal country in eastern Africa — bordered by the Red Sea, Sudan, Ethiopia and Djibouti — Eritrea has long known religious strife. For years, the government has:

  1. Monitored phone calls of suspected Christians...
  2. Ordered house raids by police...
  3. Forced churches underground and our brothers and sisters into hiding...
  4. Arrested believers...
  5. Wrongfully imprisoned countless people for their faith...
  6. And more.
One underground church leader said, "It is very difficult. We are watched all the time. Believers cannot move around freely and this makes outreach very difficult. But as hard as it is, we have to continue."

I have read that many Eritrean Christians "are held in the country's intricate tunnel system of inhumane prisons."

Eritrea is #6 on the Open Doors World Watch List of the 50 most dangerous places to be a Christ-follower. The severity of persecution there is extremely high — almost beyond envisioning.

And yet...

We can still extend the compassion and love of Jesus to the ones who "have to continue" for the sake of the Gospel.

As you feel prompted, or led of the Lord, to give generously to Liberty Relief International today, you will enable our Christ-centered partners on the ground to provide humanitarian and spiritual assistance quickly to those who most need it.

You will also provide trauma counseling, housing, job training and other practical needs...

As well as Bibles, discipleship materials and other support for those who are oppressed, spied on and threatened by their own government, their own neighbors — like Christians living in Eritrea.

Every dollar of every gift matters to our persecuted family.

Thank you for your generosity.

May the Lord bless you for praying that "the peace of God, which transcends all understanding." will guard the hearts and minds of believers facing hostility and violence — in Eritrea and around the world.
