Volcanic Disaster in the Congo Displaces Thousands

Send Help—Deliver Hope!

Thousands have been fleeing the city of Goma in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the U.N. says, in the wake of Mount Nyiragongo’s volcanic eruption.

“More than 150 children have been separated from their families, and more than 170 children are feared to be missing,” UNICEF reported.

A U.N. news report explains: "It is not yet clear how many households have been affected by the eruption. ... Scores of children in the area near Goma's airport have been left homeless and destitute."

This devastating natural disaster is yet another tragedy for the people of DRC.

Hundreds of thousands of children have also been bearing the brunt of yearslong civil violence, which UNICEF calls “one of the world’s worst displacement crises for children."

And while Open Doors reports that the majority of the country’s population is Christian, Islamic oppression from extremist groups results in kidnappings, destruction and additional displacement.

In fact, “The DRC wasn’t on the World Watch List last year—its spike in persecution reflects the extreme violence suffered by Christians.” The country now holds the #40 spot on the World Watch List.

I boldly urge you today: Please don’t turn a blind eye to the suffering of our persecuted family and others in the Congo and elsewhere. Whether they live in Africa, the Middle East or Asia, they need your compassionate support immediately.
