A Widow on the Run

Jul 24, 2019

Amina was given an ultimatum just days after her husband died: Recant your faith in Jesus or face the wrath of being an apostate. She fled to a safer location, but now she’s on the run again...

Stories like Amina's are increasing in countries where Christianity is illegal or where Muslim oppression of followers of other religions is escalating.

The efforts of ISIS-backed Islamic Forces (IF) in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo to establish an Islamic caliphate have fueled the boldness of extremists in Uganda (a caliphate is a religious empire controlled by Sharia, the Islamic legal code). There are frequent reports of machete attacks against Christians who won't convert from Christianity back to Islam; young boys being kidnapped, tortured and left for dead for refusing to deny Jesus; the shutting down of Christian events, death threats, church vandalism and more.

After Amina's husband died, she asked her pastor to help with the arrangements and burial, a request that infuriated Muslims in her community. Because of the ultimatum to recant her faith, Amina feared for her life and fled to a safer location.

Amina is very grateful for the emergency assistance she received that provided enough for her to pay rent and to start a small business to support herself. But recently, a Muslim woman from Amina's hometown saw her and made contact through the purchase of some items from her. Amina fears that the woman will report her location to those who threatened her before—so now she must relocate again.
